Principal's Message
It is said that if the entire world’s knowledge from the beginning of time until 1845 were to be plotted on a graph it would measure only 1 inch tall. From 1845 to 1945 – just 100 years – the graph would measure 3 inches tall. But from 1945 until today the graph would be as tall as a skyscraper!
With this incredible and relentless explosion of knowledge, how do we prepare our children (and ourselves) for the future? Certainly lifelong learning would be an essential attitude for one to possess to avoid being obsolete in a fast changing world. However, the diligent lifelong learner needs to be more; he also has to be an effective learner to grapple with the complex challenges he will face in an increasingly complex world. He needs to have the right set of values that will be his compass in ambiguity. He also needs to know how to tap on his own capabilities to be self-directing as well as the synergy with others to extend his capabilities. In short, he needs the right habits, attitudes and skills to be personally and socially effective for learning and for life.
In 2006, the school revisited its vision and charted a new direction for its next stage of growth with the vision of “Empowered Learners, Creative Minds”. Empowerment is the key to an effective learner while the creative mind will open up a world of unlimited opportunities and possibilities. Empowered learning and creative thinking – how will we achieve that? Key among the varied strategies will be guided opportunities to be self-directing, responsible and reflective in learning; to develop effective personal and social habits and attitudes; to engage in creative and innovative thinking; and to work and learn synergistically in teams.
The school’s core values remain important in our journey as
· Care is not only about acting out of concern for others but also about nurturing from dependence to independence and interdependence.
· Respect is not only about acknowledging the value and rights of each individual but also the tremendous potential that the individual has.
· Teamwork allows one to be fully empowered by tapping on the synergy of the team
· Lifelong Learning is about valuing learning, understanding that learning is timeless and an asset for the future, and therefore, the need for one to be an effective learner as well.
In the years ahead, the following 5 strategic thrusts will help us to move towards realizing our vision:
1. To be a Quality School – A school that attains not only quality academic results but also provides for an excellent quality of school experience for our pupils so that there is a supportive and challenging environment for learning
2. To become a leading IT Learning Hub – This is because IT will be an important means by which we will empower learning in the school
3. To nurture every pupil to be a creative and innovative thinker and team learner – Creativity and team learning will be essential life skills for the empowered learner for generating opportunities and possibilities
4. To mould every pupil to become a responsible citizen and leader – Leadership means having effective personal and social habits and skills to be self-directing as well as winning with others; these are the essentials of empowerment for both self and active citizenship
5. To become a Learning Organization – A learning organization will strengthen its own empowerment for learning
This exciting journey we have before us is a challenging one, but it is also one with great opportunities for growth as we build capacities not only for today but for tomorrow’s challenges.
