Our History

Chua Chu Kang Primary School (CCKPS) is a government school that offers the national curriculum and the 3 mother tongue languages i.e. Chinese Language, Malay Language and Tamil language. Situated in Choa Chu Kang, the school started operations on 2 January 1994 at South View Primary School with 400 pupils in P1 to P4. When the school moved to its present site in 1995, it had an enrolment of 1500 pupils in 44 classes from P1 to P5. Its current enrolment is 2115 in 60 classes. The staff strength has expanded to 108 teachers this year, including adjunct teachers.
The school was officially opened by the then MP for Hong Kah North, Dr John Chen, in June 1997.
The 1st batch of PSLE pupils obtained a 96% emplacement rate in secondary schools which was higher than the national average. Since 1999 the PSLE emplacement rate has either equalled or been above the national average. Last year the school obtained an impressive emplacement rate of 99.1%.
The School Vision is “Empowered Learners, Creative Minds” and its 5 strategic thrusts are:
- To be a Quality School.
- To be a leading IT Learning Hub
- To nurture every pupil to be a creative and innovative thinker and a team learner
- To mould every pupil to be a responsible citizen and leader
- To become a learning organisation
In 2001, the school restructured its organization to a consortium structure to better serve the demands of ability-driven education. During that year, project work was implemented at P5 level. In line with being an IT learning hub, the school also began its journey towards IT excellence in teaching and learning using an e-learning portal known as SchoolDNA. The school supported a number of staff’s innovative ideas such as Project Mount Kinabalu for Fitness Club pupils.
In 2002, the school attempted to reach the parents and the community through 2 main projects viz. Rhythm with the Community and iTOPIA. The school revamped its annual sports event and successfully implemented Sports Carnival, a new initiative with emphasis on mass participation from P3 to P6 pupils. The school also applied for and was awarded the People Developer Standard certification on 1st October 2002. It also won the Thinking Culture Award that year.
The school surfaced its 4 core values – CARE, RESPECT, LIFELONG LEARNING and TEAMWORK through an envisioning exercise with key personnel and staff and feedback from parents. The school blocks are named after these 4 values.
In 2003 & 2004, a more concerted effort in character education by the Civics and Moral Education Department resulted in the birth of the Values Inculcation Programme. Pupils were also encouraged to look beyond themselves to the needs of children in other countries through the overseas community involvement project 'Bridging The Gap' in Hanoi. In addition, pupils were exposed to more integrated lessons and experiential learning. Fitness Club pupils were challenged to trek Taman Negara and climb Mount Ophir. The school also enhanced its e-learning portal in collaboration with Litespeed during this time.
To foster better communication with staff and parents, the school made use of technology as well as more face-to-face communication sessions. These took the form of the CCKPS Knowledge Management System, Value-Addedness Tracking System, 'Breakfast with the Principal' sessions for parents, and focus group discussions using case studies and group dialogue with staff.
In 2005, the school piloted a number of new projects such as SEED CL, Use of Video Technology in the teaching of English Language, SMS Broadcast System and Special PE & Art Programmes. The school also co-hosted the MOE Excel Fest – Family Edventure. On that day, the school had an Open House where it showcased the school’s efforts in innovation & enterprise. The school was also re-certified as a People Developer organization in October.
In 2006, the school has moved on to empower pupils, staff and parents to become more effective learners. This is done through a Personal & Social Effectiveness programme for pupils, reflective teaching and learning by teachers through the use of Video Technology, the establishment of a Senior Teachers Team and partnering MCYS to establish a School Family Education programme for parents, pupils and staff. The school started a Twinning Programme with Zhonghua Road Primary School in Wuhan, China. The school was also awarded the LEADIT@Schools scheme which recognises the school as one of the top 15% of IT schools.
In 2007, the school attained the MOE Character Development Award (Level 1), Sustained Achievement Awards for Sports and Aesthetics and the Green Audit Sustained Achievement Award (Lotus). The school also attained excellent PSLE results that exceeded comparable schools in almost all subject areas. These awards and achievements helped to validate the school’s continual efforts in providing a quality holistic education to pupils. To further encourage a culture of experimentation and research, the school introduced the Communities of Practice, carried out collaborative project efforts with SUN Microsystem, SingTel and Uniservity as well as participated in 2 TLLM projects supported by MOE. The outcomes of the projects were shared at the West Zone Learning Festival and ICET Conference. These projects showed that a Problem-Based Learning approach enhanced by ICT is a viable pedagogical model for engaging pupils in learning and promoting self-directed learning. The school thus adopted Problem-Based Learning as a key pedagogical model in the curriculum,
