Getting Students into the Right Habits 2
Thursday, 2 July 2008
As any parent, I was excited about my son, Yash starting school in Primary 1. I had many apprehensions about how his first day would be.
I had heard about how kids would feel lost and scared in the new "big school building" or with so many new children. |
|
They would cry on the 2nd day of the school, not wanting to go at all. Somehow I wanted him to have a good start and then came the letter from the school informing parents about the schedule of the first day at the school. Having done my education back in India, I was very impressed when I read about the buddy system which I would like to call the "Feel good /Feel welcome" system. |

On the first day of the school I accompanied my son in the school bus and as soon as we got off the bus, a P5 boy took him by his hand and my son left, all ears to that boy without even saying bye to me! |
In the evening he was excitedly talking about his new school and his buddy "Alan" who had taken him around the school. I now knew my son had comfortably transformed from a kindergarten kid to an independent P1 boy. At the end my son said,"mum there was no need for you to come with me in the bus!" And I was taken aback but felt secretly happy. I was thankful for the simple but a proactive effort on the part of the school which ensured that my son got the confident jumpstart he needed and he was now looking forward to going to school everyday. |
|
It was a win- win situation for both my son and Alan (his buddy) because this whole practice not only gave my son the confidence but also gave Alan a chance to develop his leadership / mentor/ coaching qualities. |

| The exercise taught my son to be more responsible for his actions, for example buying food from the canteen and thus become more independent .He has also learnt the importance of listening and has realized that he must understand first then expect to be understood. This is the habit of, "Seek first to understand and then to be understood". This story is contributed by a parent who sees the benefits of the school’s adoption of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits. More details about the school’s pervasive Personal and Social Effectiveness Programme anchoring on the 7 Habits can be obtained from http://www.chuachukangpri.moe.edu.sg/student/PSE.html |
