Use of Open Source Software (OSS) for teaching and learning

The school is still partnering Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, MOE ETD, Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd and Resolvo Systems Pte Ltd to promote the use of alternative ICT tools such as OSS for teaching and learning. Staff will be taught how to use the tools and then translate their learning to use in class and in turn teach their pupils how to use the tools. P3 to P6 pupils will receive a CD containing the OSS for them to install at home to continue their learning.

Open source software refers to computer software available with its source code and under an open source license to study, change, and improve its design. Programs are more accessible and available to pupils. OSS also adopts open standard and allow more choices and freedom to use. It is assures that the system are less prone to virus attack , adware and malware.

According to BECTA (British Educational Communications and Technology Agency) report on OSS in school, main advantage of OSS is low cost and stability and reliability.

Examples of OSS:
1. Operating System: Linux (Various Distributions: Red Hat, Debian)
2. Server-based Applications / Tools: MySQL (Database), Moodle (eLearning Systems) and phpBB (Community Portal)
3. Desktop Applications: Mozilla (Firefox, Thunderbird) - formerly Netscape, Open Office, Nvu (Webpage Design) and GIMP (Graphics Design)

The objectives are to develop pupils will become more self-directed problem-based learners, acquiring problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as providing alternative cost-effective ICT tools to pupils for learning beyond school hours.

Video Conferencing with overseas schools

The school has linked up with three overseas schools through the Global Gateway (http://www.globalgateway.org/Default.aspx?page=14), MOE ETD and the Twinning Programme.

In 2007, we successfully linked up with our twinning school, Zhong Hua Road Primary School in Wuhan, China and also a school in Melbourne for pupils to learn from one another.

The school will be having video conferencing sessions with the following overseas school will continue the effort in this area to enhance pupils' learning by overcoming distance barrier.

E-Learning for Pupils

Our school embarked on this e-learning journey since year 2003. All pupils are now able to access the e-learning portal from home and in school. Teachers send e-lesson packages to pupils regularly, so that the pupils can learn and do the e-homework independently at their own pace. Free access areas are set up in school to allow pupils who do not have computers at home to access e-learning portal during their free time.

In 2008, all pupils will still have Litespeed and Learning Advantage accounts, as well as Connected Learning Community account (see Connected Learning Community for more information).

Connected Learning Community

The UniServity Connected Learning Community (cLc) Learning Platform is a web-based collaborative learning environment which has been developed in conjunction with schools, education authorities and prominent thought leaders in education. The UniServity cLc offers a secure teaching and learning environment and the ability of learners to create and join innovative learning communities. In addition, learners are able to join a cLc Collaborative Project with teachers, learners and experts across the globe in real-world problem solving projects.

Support time for pupils are set up in Term 1 (Mon, 1.00pm to 2.30pm; Wed, 12.30pm to 2.00pm; Fri, 1.00pm to 2.30pm) and Term 2 and 3 (Wed, 12.30pn to 2.00pm) to guide pupils to further explore the cLc.

This platform is a joint project with Singtel and only P3 and P4 pupils will pilot the use of cLc this year. The P3 pupils will pilot the self-sustained Pupils Digital Records (PDRs) by building their e-portfolio and upload to cLc. The P4 pupils will use the platform for Problem-based Learning lessons.

Communication portal

Pupils are also able to give their valuable suggestions through the Electronic Pupil Suggestion System found in the communication portal. The suggestions will be evaluated by the teachers in-charge and tokens of award are given on a monthly basis for pupils who make the most suggestions and the best implemented suggestion.

A discussion forum is also in place for pupils and teachers to discuss any topics. This provides another channel for teachers and pupils to communicate.

Action Research by teachers

Our teachers are also encouraged to do action research to improve their teaching strategies with the use of ICT tools.

This year, some teachers will be working with Sun Microsystems and Resolvo Pte Ltd to test Thin Client system for teaching and learning. This is supported by MOE IT Branch.
